Alexa - Alexa's traffic rankings are based on the usage patterns of Alexa Toolbar users and data collected from other, diverse sources over a rolling 3 month period. It is based on a combined measure of reach and pageviews. Reach is determined by the number of unique Alexa users who visit a site on a given day. Pageviews are the total number of Alexa user URL requests for a site. Multiple requests for the same URL on the same day by the same user are counted as a single pageview. The site with the highest combination of users and pageviews is ranked #1.

Quantcast - Directly measures traffic for quantified publishers and provides rough estimates for the rest of the web. It gauges the actual reach, frequency and popularity of websites using a Mass Inference algorithm to produce refined profiles that accurately represent web audiences.

Compete - Uses rigorous statistics to make sure estimates balance demographic and connection factors that match the entire U.S. Internet population. More than a dozen metrics are used including unique visitors, rank, visits, attention, velocity, average stay, pages per visit, page views, reach, total time spent, and visits per person.

Statbrain - Combines actual number of visits to a website with information about number of links that point towards the site, country, Alexa ranking and other data that is available on-line to estimate the number of visits that a site actually has.
